Shantytown - Westland, New Zealand - operational Built 1913 - 42" gauge - 30 tons - 2 trucks 120d Purchased by the Potate Timber Co., Matapuna NZ and shipped unassembled to New Zealand. Assembled in the NZ Railways Petone workshops. Later sold to Pukuwea Sawmills Ltd of Mananui, NZ where it continued to work after subsequent resale to Ellis & Burnard. During the 1940's it was transferred to work in Mangapahei before its final commercial use as a yard shunter in Ongarue in 1962. It was purchased for preservation in the mid 1960's and moved south to the current Shantytown site in Westland by 1969. It began operation at Shantytown in January of 1980 where it continues its duties today. Upper two photos

vertical steam cylinders. Note the double flanged wheels with cleats (on the
tires between the wheel flanges). The locomotive was destined for use on
Stern's log
"pole" railroad. |
