Oldest Standard Gauge Shay - Restoration Progress
Centrailia, WA USA  Scott Wickert provides an update on Stimson Mill Company #23's restoration progress:

"The 4th NB-65 truck box has been repaired. The steam cylinder casting of the air pump has been rebored on a vertical lathe built in 1914. All the wheelsets are done and the front truck has been further assembled. This has been a time consuming process. Lots of bars and bolt holes that have to line-up!! We are now in the process of further assembling the rear truck. The next step is to start the repair of the old cast frame brackets and then reconstruct the frame."

Oldest Standard Gauge Shay - Restoration Progress
Centrailia, WA USA  Scott Wickert provides an update on Stimson Mill Company #23's restoration progress:

"We have repaired 3 of the (NB-65) truck boxes and currently working on the 4th box.  They have taken much more time than expected to repair.  They were very heavily worn.  One of the boxes must have had a bearing break and fell out while operating because the journal had worn 1.5" into the truck box!  It required some creative thinking to repair.  The gear rims that bolt onto the wheels are also ready for installation. They did require some welding.  I have taken the 4 wheel sets to the MRSR shop at Mineral, WA.  One wheel set is done.  Once the wheels are back to our shop the trucks will be further assembled.  We will place wood blocks where the bearings go until we can have the bearings cast.  We have also started work on the air pump that we located in the stream last year.  The pump has been completely disassembled.  The center casting has been repaired, work has begun on the steam and air cylinder castings.  Both will require boring. It is amazing how well the pump survived for sitting in a stream bank since 1942 when it was torched off the engine!   It will still be a massive undertaking to complete!   I hope to have pictures posted of a near complete 1880's Shay truck soon."

"Experience a rare chance to ride behind all thee of the major geared locomotives. We are the only railroad that can offer you the chance to see an operating Shay, Heisler and Climax on the same train! This day long excursion will feature photo-runbys and a chance to photograph all three engines in action. The tentative fare for this trip is $99 per person."

Oldest Standard Gauge Shay - Restoration Progress
Centrailia, WA USA  Scott Wickert provides an update on Stimson Mill Company #23's restoration progress:

"Since the last report we have repaired the rear frame bolster center plate and fabricated a new center plate for the front frame bolster. We have completed the fabrication of the 2 (NA-46) pedestal boxes and 4 (NA-48) inside boxes. Much of the brake rigging to the trucks has also been repaired and fabricated as needed. We are now in the process of repairing the (NB-65) truck boxes, they go on the RH side of the trucks. They are in rough shape and will probably take a month to repair all four of them. We are also repairing the 41 teeth gear rims that bolt onto the wheels. The new I-beam for the frame bolsters has been cut to size and most of the rivet holes are drilled."

Center Plates
These are the front & rear frame bolster center plates. The center plate on the right is the one we located in the middle of the stream with a metal detector in Sept. '99, it goes to the rear frame bolster. It needed some repair, including welding up the old holes and redrilling. The center plate on the left we fabricated for the front bolster. The original front center plate was to far gone to repair.

Inside Boxes

Front - (upper photo)
Back - (lower photo)

These are the (NA-48) inside boxes which we made. They were a somewhat complicating fabrication. The "back view" photo shows where the bearing sits and waste packing will go below it. The other photo shows- the tops which have lubrication slots for oiling the journal and 2" tubing that keeps the pedestal springs (6" OD springs) in the proper location. The front of each box has a tube that is tapped for a 3/4" bolt (which goes against the thrust plate on the bearing for adjustment).
Pedestal Box

Here is one of the two newly fabricated (NA-46) pedestal boxes. They stand 21" tall and are very heavy!
Pedestal box cap

We fabricated 4 of these (NA-47) pedestal box caps. They are 7 3/4" x 10 3/4" and hold the inside box in place. The holes on the cap correspond to the holes and thrust bolt on the inside box.
