Kalbach Lumber #4 - s/n 791 - destined
for Richmond Furnace, Pennsylvania Built 12/06/1902 - 36" gauge - 6"x10" cylinders - 22" drivers - 10 tons - 2 trucks - named "Kalbach" Note the two outward positioned cylinder steam chests with the single cover plate for both. Unlike the Willamette locomotives whose cylinders were positioned outward, very few Shays employed this design. Photo posting permission was granted by the

Kansas City Southern #900 - s/n
2570 - destined for Kansas City, Missouri Built 02/05/1913 - Std. gauge - 18"x20" cylinders - 48" drivers - 160 tons (286,700 lbs) - 3 trucks - maximum tractive effort 74,400 lbs. It was the heaviest Shay that Lima ever built. It also had the distinction of being the only one built with this cylinder size. Photo posting permission was granted by the

Lima Shay Demonstrator #126
- s/n 126 - near Cadillac, Michigan - circa 1884. Lettering at rear reads "The Shay Locomotive For Logging, Mining, Switching, C. & C." Note the two outward positioned cylinder steam chests. Unlike the Willamette locomotives whose cylinders were positioned outward, very few Shays employed this design.
Sold later to St. Croix Land & Lumber Co. of Wildwood, Wisconsin. This was the only Shay manufactured with a "Joy" valve gear. (1) |
