This page provides various additional information about selected individual Shay locomotives found on this site.   The information is organized by  S/N.

1551  - White Knob Copper Co.  - added May 6, 2001
Before identification, all that was positively known about the locomotive in this photo was its location;  MacKay, Idaho.  With this and the roster, the GSLW concluded that it was either s/n 1551 or 1926.   After comparing this photo with the one of s/n 1926 on Shaylocomotives.com from the George Kadelak collection,  George Pitchard believes   the mystery locomotive on this site (GSLW) was 1551.    George found two items on the mystery locomotive are distinctly different from those on the 1926.

1).  The curvature of the cab roof is significantly less than that on 1926.
2).  The whistle is a two piece unit on the mystery photo (air is visible around it's mid-section)  where as that on 1926 is an unbroken cylinder.

The original uncropped photo of 1926 found on Mr. Kadelak's  Shay Locomotive Photo CD, shows a 2nd unidentified Shay parked behind 1926. That locomotive looks very similar (roof curvature and 2 piece whistle)  to the GSLW's photo of 1551.  Both locomotives (1551 & 1926)  would have been in use at White Knob at the same time.     We concur with George's identification.
