Subject: Arkansas obscurities Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 09:56:38 -0700 From: "Thomas Lawson" To: Dave, Thanks to you and Ken for finding Mersman and Mohawk, Arkansas, for me! Both are undoubtedly the locations I was searching for in that regard. I've given Ken the information on Oak Leaf/Stroud, Arkansas, so hopefully he will turn up something. That USGS map search site you e.mailed to me is most interesting! I have enjoyed using it to find four historical sites in Georgia that I've never been previously able to locate and now see that one place here in Alabama that I could never find was the result of the site having been underwater (Lake Martin) for over 60 years! Now, Dave, re: Shay #1553 being owned by E. Dillon & Son at "Mersman Spur, Arkansas." This is not correct. E. Dillon was located at Indian Rock, Virginia. The data is messed up in Koch's Shay book. You will note in my Supplement that I had no location shown for E. Dillon at the #1553 entry. I knew Arkansas was not correct for Dillon. The #1553 was Dillon's first No. 1 at Indian Rock, but he soon found out that a 10-tonner was too small even for him and it was replaced by the second No. 1 (#1816), a Class 15-2, in early 1907. The smaller No. 1 was returned to Lima, regauged and then sent to northern Cross County, Arkansas. So you need to correct whatever you have for Shay s/n 1553 as being Dillon in Arkansas. TOM
