The locomotive, owned by the Solvay Process Co., was one of two Heislers the company operated at the quarry.  Both (s/n 1385 & 1386) were two truck, 36 ton, standard gauge units built the same year.  It is unknown which of the two carried the #12 road number.

The 50 ton standard gauge locomotive was purchased new by SMMC of Jackson, Alabama in 1910.  They went bankrupt on September 22, 1914,  with the locomotive then reverting to a creditor, C.W. Zimmerman Manufacturing Co. also of Jackson.  Zimmerman operated the locomotive in their lumber business until early 1919 at which time it was sold to the locomotive dealer SI&E.

As evidenced on this locomotive, wheel counter weights were not part of the early locomotives manufactured.    Retro-fit kits of cast weights that could be bolted between the spokes were later made available by Stearns
